Junofest: Day Three...

Christine McAvoy: Photos For Our Fathers.

Day Three: Saturday March 28th.
Start Time: 1:00pm
End Time: 2:30am
Locations: The Middle of The Street, The Cellar, Nat Jay's Love Shack

RUN DOWN:

So the day starts of with the wonderful Nat Jay, playing on Granville St.
It was exceptionally cold to stand outside that day, and as I thought I would be in the "LONG ASS TENT" I did not dress appropriately.
Nat was wonderful and was backed up by her Borrowed Band. Peter Carruthers, the bassist for Said The Whale was pulling triple duty, playing with STW, Nat AND Dan Mangan. Five shows in total during the weekend. So when his father came up to me with his business card asking if I could send photos of his son "if I had some", I laughed.

Once Nat successfully put Love When I Can into my head for the entire day, I went to warm up with friends before the evening concerts.

Hannah Georgas was on first at The Cellar (which is def. a club)...and was brilliant as always and made me want to slow dance when she sang The National.
Nat Jay vol. 2 was right after Hannah and I enjoyed the set as much as I did earlier in the day. I think her pants were the finishing touch...

Seconds after Nat finished the Cellar returned into club-i-ness...which was kinda irritating, but when a DJ starts the set with the Flight Of The Conchords theme music, you can't help but smile. (Plus this introduced me to a song called "I'm In Miami Bitch", which unfortunately replaced Nay Jay on repeat in my head).

Nat and I decided that the Media Club would be a zoo and we couldn't see Hey Ocean...so bagels were in order and went to her casa to chill before finding out what was going on. Upon a lack of text messages and realizing that everything was almost done anyways, bagels and relaxing was where it was at.

Refuel for party night...

Junofest: Day Two...

Dear "The Media Club",

Please get better lights.

Sincerely,
Christine McAvoy

Day One: Friday March 27th.
Start Time: 8:00pm
End Time: 2:30am
Locations: The Media Club, The Backstage Lounge, Fir St & 7th at 2:14am

RUN DOWN:

Now that my distaste for the lack of proper stage lighting is out of the way...
I got to the Media Club in time to miss the line up. Which was lucky because on the way out, there was no getting in. It was, as they say out here "a gong show".

I saw Shawn Hlookoff (HULL-ook-off). There were lots of screaming girls. To me, he sings like a gimmicky cross between Justin Timberlake and John Mayer, but I dunno. Not my cup of tea...I didn't even take photos. (well, one, but it's nothing special).

Said The Whale
...oh how I love you. And I am so happy the room was packed. Government Heart was my favourite of the night. I needed Dave Vertesi for a Goodnight Moon dance party though.

After this, the executive decision was to say bye to STW and leave to get to the Backstage Lounge in time for Maurice. The bus/walk was too slow to catch Laura Smith, which I was sad about.
We got there with a minimal wait outside and sat and chatted with the boys pre-show.

Vince Vaccaro came with 3 of 5 Maurice-s on stage, which was cool. But everything was running late and the set was short... still listened and took photos.

Maurice was a dance party. All the friends, and friends of friends, were there and I loved Love is Love (go figure).

Day Two ends with getting heckled by drunken idiots on the way home.

Junofest: Day One...

[[note: I really should have blogged about this as it was happening, but seriously...4 nights of not getting home before 2am takes a lot out of you. I'm still impressed that I got some of the photos up during this weekend.]]

Day One: Thursday March 26th.
Start Time: 4:00pm
End Time: 3:30am
Locations: Granville Street/Westjet Street Party, The Media Club, Megabite Pizza, Cab

RUN DOWN:

I went with intent to support my ever favourites: Dan Mangan and Said The Whale, and stayed for every single performance that afternoon/night.
-The Dudes were hilarious and so fun to watch and coined the phrase "LONG ASS TENT", referring to the city block sized performance tent. This could be hear shouted throughout the weekend.
-Dan Mangan was as amazing as ever...Josh McNorton seems to think that the girls and myself made him blush with all our shouting.
-Said The Whale was next. The ladies and I snaked out spots up front and made new friends while establishing our dance area. It was hard to see Spencer though, due to the amazing lights on the stage. Love the Red Rocket.
-Jon and Roy...Dawn you were right...it IS Jon Middleton. (Whom once gave me a Sitka t-shirt for, you know, being awesome.) I met their manager and promo guy and am giving them photos..nice guys.
-Hey Rosetta! I finally got to hear them live and loved it. They are touring across Canada. Go see them. Josh Ward = so nice.
-Hot Hot Heat...gave me a beer for giving them paper to write their set lists on. Funny.

After this, the whales etc. went to the media club. I have no idea who was playing. I just needed to sit. Which was great because once the place cleared out we danced up a storm.

And this is only day ONE people...

Un-Wine'd

So I went to Mexico.
And now I'm back and catching up with everything. I even had a shoot today.
Bizzy Bee.

In my mailbox, upon my return, was my copy of the April Issue of Vancouver Magazine and on the 2nd last page was my photo of Joey's Wine Bar at the Bentall Center in downtown Vancouver.
The room was hard to work, people saying yes and then no to being photographed and then I was in the way every two seconds (you can see how crowded it was when i GOT there in the photo), but the photo they chose in the end...I think it looks great!

Anyways...here is it. I am uploading a big version so that you can click on it and see it bigger to read the text about it (specifically the last line). It had me laughing at midnight after 12 hours of traveling!

Drag In Parliament II

Drag In Parliament

I ferried myself over to Victoria on Sunday evening because on Monday morning I had quite an assignment with Xtra West.

I was asked to film (yes, video...) a group of drag queens and elected royalty of the gay community as they went for a visit with Spencer Herbert at the Parliament buildings!
It was quite a long day, they did tours and then went to be introduced in the gallery/to the house.

As we were on our way out to do some exit interviews, Justine Hunter, a political reporter from the Globe and Mail came over to ask the group some questions. Long story short, she sent my contact info to the photo desk who bought my photo and it was in today's G&M in BC!

Here's what it looks like:

I've been working all day on the video (I have even done voice-over, and it's not that awful) and will post it when they put it on youtube.

Now I think I will make dinner and then sleep.
