Take a Peak at This

(that pun's for you Dan)

Day two of being on the Dan Mangan Publicity Tour :)
I went with Dan to the Peak (100.5 FM here in Vancouver) to take a few shots during his interview with Peter and Carmen. He also played a cover of The Smith's There Is A Light That Never Goes Out which brought me back to one of the first times I heard Dan play live.

Here are some shots; the first is from 8th and Hemlock where I found Dan restringing his guitar.

Indie King vs. Hindi King

It was the Bombay.

Dan Mangan was at the CBC Radio 3 studios to do an interview and a Pun-Off with host Tariq Hussain and I tagged along to take some shots.
It was extremely amusing, esp. to be behind the scenes and watch them writing out their list of puns. I think Dan won in the end...it was definitely the 'ovum' joke.
Click here to listen to the interview (the Pun-Off is at 17:00).

Ryan & Brendan

Originally my Monday evening was going to be spent with a surprise photo-booth for my friend Ryan's boyfriend Brendan and his friends, but it fell through. I suggested to Ryan that I could take photos of just the two of them and they both were very excited about that.
So I ventured over to UBC for the 2nd time this month and ended up at Wreck Beach for the first time ever. Not in the nude section mind you.

They are very cute together and very lovey, which makes for perfect photos and little prompting!

What Darlings, The O'Darling...

Busy busy busy for a Sunday evening in Vancouver.

First I headed to the Railway to see Matt Epp perform again. He was just as great as the night before and I'm glad I went! Had to miss
Ann Vriend
to jump over to the Media Club for show #2...

By the time I got there I had missed Benny Schütze, Said The Whale, Aidan Knight and only caught the last song by Hey Ocean!... From what I hear it was a free-for-all of Vancouver's indie music scene. Dan Mangan was in the crowd and got called on stage, performed two songs and then it was on to the main act...
The O'Darling.

They are a pretty amazing band...apparently originally from Victoria, but based in Toronto now. They had the entire crowd on their feet, many of them dancing. Aidan joined them on stage for a few songs too. I'm excited to see him perform at Dan's CD Release show on Friday. By the end of the evening most everyone's facebook and twitter statuses changed to praise for the band and the evening.
Here are some shots from the love-fest at the Media Club:

Soundproof: Warped Tour '09 - Vancouver

For our first Soundproof Magazine assignment ever, courtesy of Ms. Carmen Cheung, Jon and I were sent out to shoot Warped Tour at Thunderbird Stadium.

Highlight of the day was seeing Shad again, followed closely by alexisonfire. I haven't shot an aof show since the last time I was at the SCENE festival in St. Catharines...which may be up to 5 years ago! Oh reliving my youth.

Now that I know what photos they're using I can post a few more of my own...but for now:

Here's the link to the slideshow!

You Don't Know That I Was Up 'Til 3am Last Night... Working on These Photos!

First surprise of the evening: passing Matt on the street and meeting one of the nicest people I've ever encountered.
Second surprise: walking into the Cocoa Nymph and realizing...I've been there before.

As it happens, I shot some of their chocolate for Vancouver Magazine's 101 Things to Eat Before You Die last year!:

and apparently they do shows in the cafe area!

I was introduced to Matt Epp (@mattepplife) by Jon and got addicted to his song This Old House (listen on his Myspace). It hit me yesterday that Matt was on tour and would probably be in Vancouver soon.
Turns out, it was that very evening!

So after Dan's show I hustled home, made dinner and took off again for 10th and Alma.

Matt is touring with Edmonton based singer-songwriter Ann Vriend who was up first on the piano. She reminded me so much of Nat Jay and I'm going to put a playlist of Vancouver music together for her!

The night was pretty amazing. I took a few photos, but it was super dark and moody in Cocoa Nymph so the photos in turn are dark and moody. But that's okay because they're playing again tonight (Aug 23rd) at the Railway Club in Vancouver...and I'll take more then.
In the meantime..enjoy:

Dan Mangan: Live at Zulu Records

I learned via Dan's Twitter acocunt(@danmanganmusic) that he'd be playing live in-store at Zulu Records at 5pm yesterday (August 22). So I grabbed my camera and walked the whole 10 blocks downhill from my house to Zulu and was hit with this:

It dawned on me later (not to mention, made me feel old) that it's technically an all ages show, which explains the vast amount of young girls in attendance.

The show was short and sweet, and ended with the entire store singing along to "Robots".
A lot of our friends showed up as well Peter, from Said The Whale, Josh McNorton from The Painted Birds, Zach Gray from The Zolas and Nadia von Hahn.
Pretty great way to spend part of an afternoon:

And, as always, here are few of my favourites:

Oh Deer!: Adrienne Pierce @ The Media Club

After an exceptionally long day (that started in the Vancouver Magazine office!) at Thunderbird Stadium shooting Warped Tour, somehow I found the energy to leave my house again and book it over to the Media Club to see Adrienne Pierce ( @adriennepierce ) perform.
I really wanted to hear her live after spending the entire day at the studio taking photos of the drums and bass being tracked on one of her songs.
She's the sweetest thing in person, and it's always cool to hear songs live for the first time.
Here are some shots:

She'll be back at the Railway Club on August 25th as part of the "International Pop Overthrow"

We Like Sports And We Don't Care Who Knows...

(the blog title is from The Lonely Island)...
I just wanted to put a shot or two up from the beach soccer tournament and the softball playoffs. They were a week apart, and both very fun to watch...

(if you noticed that in these shots, no one is actually playing the sport, good for you :) )

So many updates...

...that are still going to be a while.
Since the last blog post I've shot another wedding, beach soccer tournament play, warped tour, Adrienne Pierce's show at the Media Club, softball playoffs and I am now working on some stuff for Vancouver Magazine.
I have over 3000 photos to dig through, and I'm slowly getting there and setting priorities (the hard part).

Here's a shot from today... an "outtake" if you will... that was semi-on-purpose...
As much as pork grosses me out, it's pretty awesome to watch chef's prepare things in tedious detail.
I wrote on Twitter that once I'm rich and famous off my food photography, I'll learn to cook professionally...the majority of my study will be based around seafood and vegetables.

Okay...I'm hungry again.
